Death Row Records was a pioneering American record label founded in 1991 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, and The D.O.C. Based in Los Angeles, California, the label quickly became synonymous with West Coast hip-hop and gangsta rap, playing a significant role in shaping the genre's sound and culture during the 1990s.
Death Row Records rose to prominence with releases from iconic artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, and Tha Dogg Pound. Dr. Dre's album "The Chronic" (1992) and Snoop Dogg's debut album "Doggystyle" (1993) were both critical and commercial successes, helping to establish Death Row as a powerhouse in the music industry.
However, the label was also plagued by controversy, including legal issues, feuds, and allegations of violence. The intense rivalry between East Coast and West Coast hip-hop scenes, particularly the feud between Death Row and Bad Boy Records, led to a series of high-profile conflicts and tragic events, including the murders of Tupac Shakur in 1996 and The Notorious B.I.G. in 1997.
Despite its initial success, Death Row Records faced financial difficulties and legal troubles throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. Following Suge Knight's incarceration and the departure of key artists, the label's influence waned, and it eventually declared bankruptcy in 2006.
Despite its tumultuous history, Death Row Records remains a significant chapter in hip-hop history, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking music and cultural impact.
