Flying Nun Records is an independent record label founded in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1981 by music retailer Roger Shepherd. The label is renowned for its pivotal role in developing and promoting the "Dunedin Sound," a distinctive style of indie rock characterized by jangly guitars, lo-fi production, and melodic, often introspective songwriting.
Flying Nun Records quickly became a cornerstone of New Zealand's alternative music scene, nurturing a roster of influential bands such as The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, and The Verlaines. These bands gained cult followings both domestically and internationally, helping to put New Zealand on the global music map.
