Public Image Ltd (PIL) is an English post-punk band formed in 1978 by John Lydon, following his departure from the Sex Pistols. PIL is notable for its experimental approach, blending punk rock with diverse influences such as dub, dance, and avant-garde music. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes, with Lydon remaining the constant driving force and creative vision behind the group.

Their debut album, "Public Image: First Issue" (1978), marked a significant departure from Lydon's punk roots, featuring a more complex, bass-heavy sound. The band's early work, especially the critically acclaimed album "Metal Box" (1979), is characterized by its innovative use of rhythm and texture, incorporating heavy bass lines, dissonant guitar riffs, and unconventional song structures.

PIL's music and Lydon's distinctive vocal style and provocative lyrics have influenced a wide range of artists across genres. Despite numerous changes in personnel and varying commercial success, PIL has remained a significant and innovative force in the post-punk and alternative music scenes. Their ability to evolve and experiment has cemented their status as pioneers in pushing the boundaries of rock music.
